Mise En Scene Clip Analysis: The Hangover

The piece of film I've chosen to analyse is from the 2009 surprise hit The Hangover

At the start of this scene,Which is set in a hotel room at Caesar's Palace the camera pans around the room where we get to see what kind of state the room is in. Here we see lots of different props that include blow up dolls, bottles of champagne, bottles on the floor, bongs TV's on the wall. This has been used to show what kind of crazy night the characters had gotten up to. It has been used to familiarise the audience with what might happen at a stag do/bachelor party.

After a shot of what appears to be a women walking away we find Stu (Ed Helms) lying on the floor asleep as he wakes up we get a shot of his facial expressions which scream hungover and very confused, his hair is an absolute state he is in the same clothes he went out in. This once again has been used to signify to the audience that they had a very rough night and Stu is feeling the effects of that now. We then get a shot of Stu looking round who looks very confused. Here we get a close up of Stu's face and here we see more of the finer hair and make-up. In this shot we see that Stu has very weary eyes which may suggest they had a late night. He also has a slight cut around his mouth and some dried up blood. which can imply they got into trouble last or he cut his mouth when he it the floor.

The Lighting in this scene was a use of Practical Lighting with a use of LED lights in the beams of the room. Also there was a use of light to give the impression to the audience that it is natural light which suggests that it is day time. This is clear as the light is reflecting off certain objects such as the bathroom walls or the floor which is something that natural light does.

The costumes, hair and make-up of Stu, Allan and Phil were used to show that they all had a very late night because they are all are wearing the same clothes they went out in (except Allan who isn't wearing any trousers). In regards to hair and make-up all three characters look a mess which implies it was a rough night.

And the body language and facial expressions of the characters all imply that they are hungover. this is shown through weary eyes and blank expressions
